Every day, we perform countless actions without thinking about them: brushing our teeth, checking our phones, taking the same route to work. These are habits – behaviours that have become so automatic that we barely notice them. Scientists estimate that a surprisingly large proportion of our daily behaviour is driven by habit rather than by conscious decision. Understanding how habits work, therefore, can be a powerful tool for changing our lives.

Researchers describe habits as operating in a simple loop with three parts. First comes a “cue” – a trigger that tells the brain to begin a behaviour, such as feeling tired or seeing a notification. Next comes the “routine”, the behaviour itself. Finally comes the “reward”, the benefit the brain receives, which teaches it that the routine is worth repeating. Over time, this loop becomes automatic. The brain, which is always looking for ways to save effort, is delighted to turn a repeated behaviour into a habit so that it no longer has to think about it.

This explains why habits are so difficult to break through willpower alone. Simply deciding to stop a bad habit rarely works, because the underlying cue and craving remain. According to many experts, a more effective strategy is not to eliminate a habit but to replace it. If the cue and reward stay the same but the routine is swapped for a healthier one, the change is far more likely to last. Someone who reaches for a biscuit when stressed, for example, might learn to go for a short walk instead.

The encouraging message from this research is that we are not simply prisoners of our habits. With patience and the right approach, they can be reshaped. Small changes, repeated consistently, gradually rewire the brain. It is rarely quick or easy, and setbacks are normal. But by understanding the machinery of habit, we gain a realistic way to become, little by little, the people we wish to be.
