The past perfect is the “past before the past.” When we talk about two past events, we use the past perfect for the one that happened first. “When I arrived, the lesson had already started.” (First it started, then I arrived.)

How to make it: had + past participle

It’s the same for every subject: had + the past participle (the same form you learned for the present perfect).

Subject had + past participle
I / you / he / she / we / they I had finished / She had gone / They had eaten
The order of eventsThe past perfect shows which action came first. “The train had left when we arrived” means: 1) the train left, 2) we arrived. We missed it!

Often used with when, before, after, already

  • By the time Aisha woke up, Yusuf had already left for school.
  • Omar had studied English before he moved to Kuala Lumpur.
  • I couldn’t pay because I had forgotten my wallet.

Past perfect vs past simple

Past perfect (the earlier action) Past simple (the later action)
The film had started when we got to the cinema.
She had cooked dinner before the guests arrived.

Negatives and questions

  • Negative: I hadn’t seen that film before.
  • Question: Had you met him before the party? — Yes, I had. / No, I hadn’t.
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersUse the past perfect only when the order of two past events matters and could be unclear. If the order is obvious or you tell events in sequence, the past simple is fine: “I woke up, ate breakfast, and left.” Use had + past participle to highlight the action that happened earlier.
Common mistakes

  • When I arrived, the lesson already started. When I arrived, the lesson had already started.
  • She had went home. She had gone home. (past participle)
  • I had forget my wallet.I had forgotten my wallet.
