The structure

Real meaning“If I had studied, I would have passed” means: I did not study, and I did not pass. The Third Conditional is always about the unreal past — the opposite of what really happened.

Tutor tip for Arabic speakersThe hardest part is the double past: had + past participle in the if-clause, then would have + past participle in the result. Say the whole pattern aloud as one chunk: “if I had done, I would have done.” Contractions are common in speech: I’d have = I would have; he’d studied = he had studied.
Common mistakes
- If I would have known, I would have come. → If I had known, I would have come. (no ‘would’ in the if-clause)
- If she studied, she would have passed. → If she had studied, she would have passed.
- I would have went. → I would have gone. (past participle)
