At B1 you tell stories about the past by combining two tenses. Past Simple = a completed action. Past Continuous = an action in progress around a past moment. Together they show what was happening when something else interrupted.

The core difference

Tense Use Example
Past Simple a finished action, the main event The phone rang.
Past Continuous a longer action in progress (the background) I was studying when the phone rang.
The interruption patternThe long action (Past Continuous) is interrupted by a short action (Past Simple): “I was cooking when the lights went out.” Use when before the short action and while before the long one.

Form

Tense Structure Example
Past Continuous was/were + verb-ing They were waiting.
Past Simple verb-ed / irregular form They waited.

Examples from EduCareer

  • Aisha was revising when her tutor called.
  • While Omar was driving, he listened to an English podcast.
  • It was raining when the lesson started.
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersThe helper words was/were are easy to drop because Arabic forms the past differently. Always pair them with the -ing form for actions in progress. Use while + the long action and when + the short one — mixing them up is the most common B1 error here.
