Object Pronouns (me, him, her, us, them)

The partners of subject pronouns: me, you, him, her, it, us, them — used after verbs and prepositions. Beginner grammar with 20 questions.

In Lesson 3 you learned subject pronouns (I, you, he, she…) — the person who does the action. Now meet their partners: object pronouns (me, you, him, her…) — the person who receives the action.

Subject vs Object — see the pair

Subject (does the action) Object (receives the action)
I me
you you
he him
she her
it it
we us
they them
Where they goThe subject comes before the verb; the object comes after the verb (or after a small word like to, with, for). “She (subject) helps me (object).”

See the same person in both roles

  • She is my tutor. I like her.
  • He is my friend. I see him every day.
  • They are my classmates. I study with them.
  • We are ready. Ms Layla is helping us.

After little words (to, with, for)

Object pronouns also follow prepositions.

  • Aisha gave the book to me.
  • Come with us to the lesson.
  • This present is for you.
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersThe most common slip is using the subject form after a verb: “I saw she” or “Help I.” After the verb, switch to the object form: “I saw her,” “Help me.” Notice you and it never change — only the others do.
Common mistakes

  • I saw she yesterday.I saw her yesterday.
  • Give it to I.Give it to me.
  • Come with we.Come with us.
