To get information, we ask questions. The most useful questions begin with a question word — also called a “Wh- word” because most of them start with wh. Learn these six, and you can ask about almost anything.

The main question words

Word Asks about Example
What a thing What is your name?

The usual order is: question word + helper (do/does/is/are) + subject + verb.

  • What does Omar do? — He is an accountant.
  • When is your class? — It is on Monday evening.

Useful “How” phrases

Question Asks about
How old are you? age
How many brothers do you have? number (countable)
How much is it? price / amount
How often do you study? frequency
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersIn English, the question word goes first, and you still need a helper word like do/does/is. Don’t drop it: not “Where you live?” but “Where do you live?” The little helper is essential in English questions.
