Adverbs of Frequency
How often things happen — always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never — and exactly where to place them. Beginner grammar with 20 questions.
Adverbs of frequency tell us how often something happens. They are essential for talking about your routine and habits — how often you study, exercise, or speak English.
From always to never
| Adverb | How often (roughly) |
|---|---|
| always | 100% — every time |
| usually | about 90% |
| often | about 70% |
| sometimes | about 50% |
| rarely / seldom | about 10% |
| never | 0% — not at any time |
Where to put them: the key rule
The position depends on the verb:
| With… | Position | Example |
|---|---|---|
| normal verbs | before the verb | Aisha always studies in the evening. |
| the verb “to be” | after am/is/are | Omar is usually busy. |
The simple trickPut the frequency word before a normal verb, but after the verb “to be”. Compare: “She always is happy” is wrong — say “She is always happy.”
Examples
- I usually wake up at six.
- Yusuf never drinks coffee.
- We sometimes have lessons on Saturday.
- Ms Layla is always kind to her students.
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersOne small but important point: with a normal verb, the frequency word goes before it (“I always study”), but with am/is/are it goes after (“I am always tired”). Also, “never” already makes the sentence negative — don’t add another “not”: not “I don’t never…”
Common mistakes
- I study always in the morning. → I always study in the morning.
- She always is happy. → She is always happy.
- I don’t never eat meat. → I never eat meat.
