Prepositions: In, On, At
The clear patterns for in, on and at — for both time and place — plus the key exceptions. Beginner grammar with 20 questions.
In, on, and at are three small prepositions that confuse almost every learner — because they are used for both time and place. The good news: there are clear patterns. Once you learn them, you’ll use these words with confidence.
Prepositions of TIME
| Word | Use for | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| in | months, years, seasons, parts of the day | in January, in 2026, in summer, in the morning |
| on | days and dates | on Monday, on March 5th, on my birthday |
| at | exact times, night | at 7 o’clock, at noon, at night |
Think big to smallTime gets more exact as you move in (big: a month) → on (a day) → at (small: an exact time). Aisha’s class is in the evening, on Monday, at 6 o’clock.
- Omar starts work at 8 o’clock.
- Aisha has English on Mondays.
- We have a holiday in December.
Prepositions of PLACE
| Word | Use for | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| in | inside something; cities/countries | in the room, in the car, in Kuala Lumpur, in Malaysia |
| on | a surface; transport | on the table, on the wall, on the bus |
| at | a point or place/event | at home, at school, at the door, at a party |
- The book is on the table.
- Yusuf is at school now.
- We live in Kuala Lumpur.
Useful exceptions to remember
- We say at night (not “in night”).
- We say on the bus / on the train, but in the car.
- We say at home, at work, at school (no “the”).
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersArabic often uses one preposition (في) where English chooses between in/on/at depending on the situation. Don’t translate word for word — instead, learn English prepositions in fixed phrases: “at 7 o’clock,” “on Monday,” “in the morning,” “at home.” Memorising the whole phrase is far easier than translating each word.
Common mistakes
- I wake up in 6 o’clock. → I wake up at 6 o’clock.
- My class is in Monday. → My class is on Monday.
- She is in home. → She is at home.
