1. The three parts of a short message

2. Greetings and sign-offs

Put a comma after the nameAfter a greeting, use a comma: “Hi Omar,”. Start your message on the next line with a capital letter. Do the same after the sign-off: “Thanks,” then your name.

3. Common reasons for a short message

  • To say you can’t come: “I can’t come to the party because I am busy.”
  • To say thank you: “Thank you for your help yesterday.”
  • To invite: “Do you want to study together on Monday?”
  • To ask: “Can you send me the homework, please?”

Tutor tip for Arabic speakersKeep it short and direct. In Arabic, messages often begin with long greetings and blessings. In English, especially in a short note, one line of greeting is enough — go straight to your point. Also, always add please and thank you; in English these small words are what make a message sound polite, not long formal phrases.
