The Woman Who Mapped the Ocean Floor

For most of human history, the floor of the deep ocean was less well understood than the surface of the Moon. It was widely assumed to be a featureless, muddy plain, and this assumption went largely unquestioned until the middle of the twentieth century, when a quiet, determined geologist named Marie Tharp changed our picture of the planet forever u2013 though it would take decades for her to receive the recognition she deserved.
Tharp began her career at a time when women were routinely excluded from serious scientific fieldwork. Barred, on account of her sex, from joining the research ships that gathered data at sea, she was confined to the laboratory, where her male colleagues delivered their measurements for her to process. To many, this would have seemed a subordinate role. Tharp, however, transformed it into something extraordinary. Taking the raw soundings collected by the ships u2013 thousands of individual measurements of ocean depth u2013 she began, painstakingly, to translate the numbers into detailed maps of the sea floor.
What emerged from her work astonished her. As she plotted the data, a vast mountain range revealed itself, running down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. More remarkably still, she noticed a deep valley, or rift, running along its crest. To Tharp, this suggested something almost heretical at the time: that the Earth’s crust was splitting apart, and that the continents were slowly moving. When she showed her findings to her colleague Bruce Heezen, he initially dismissed them as “girl talk” u2013 a phrase that says a great deal about the obstacles she faced. Yet the evidence, as evidence has a way of doing, refused to go away.
The maps Tharp produced would eventually provide crucial support for the theory of plate tectonics, one of the great scientific revolutions of the twentieth century and the foundation of modern geology. It is no exaggeration to say that our understanding of how the Earth works rests in part on the meticulous labour she carried out at a drawing table, using data she had been forbidden to collect herself. For many years, her name was little known outside her field, her contribution overshadowed by that of her male collaborators.
Recognition, when it finally arrived, came late in her life and after it. Today, Marie Tharp is celebrated as one of the most important figures in the earth sciences, and her story has become emblematic of the countless women whose achievements were long overlooked. There is a certain irony in the fact that someone kept from the ocean should have shown the world what lay at its bottom. Her career is a reminder that the barriers placed in a person’s path do not always determine the significance of what they accomplish u2013 and that the historical record, though slow, can sometimes be corrected.
