The Power of Sleep
Read about why sleep matters so much for health. A B1 reading text with key words and comprehension questions.
We spend about a third of our lives asleep, yet many people treat sleep as a waste of time. In our busy modern world, it is common to hear people say they are proud of sleeping only four or five hours a night. However, scientists now understand that sleep is one of the most important things we can do for our health.
During sleep, the body and brain do essential work. The body repairs muscles and fights illness, while the brain organises memories and removes waste products that build up during the day. Studies have shown that people who do not get enough sleep are more likely to become ill, gain weight and have difficulty concentrating. A lack of sleep can also affect our mood, making us feel irritable and anxious.
Experts recommend that most adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. To sleep better, they suggest going to bed at the same time every day, avoiding screens before bed and keeping the bedroom dark and cool. It may be tempting to stay up late working or watching television, but the truth is simple: good sleep is not a luxury. It is a necessity, and it is the foundation of a healthy and productive life.
- essential – completely necessary; extremely important
- repair – to fix something that is damaged
