The Plastic Problem

A B1 text about plastic pollution and solutions. Practise understanding cause, effect and tone.

Plastic pollution has become one of the biggest environmental problems of our time. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans, where it harms sea animals and slowly breaks into tiny pieces that enter the food chain. The problem affects every country, rich or poor.

Fortunately, more and more people are taking action. Some cities have banned single-use plastic bags, while many shops now encourage customers to bring their own containers. Young people in particular are leading campaigns to reduce waste and to put pressure on governments and companies to change.

Individual choices matter too. Simple habits, such as carrying a reusable water bottle or refusing plastic straws, can make a difference when millions of people do them together. Although the challenge is enormous, there is reason to be hopeful if everyone plays their part.
