The Past Simple Tense
Talk about finished past actions: regular -ed verbs, common irregular verbs, and did/didn't for negatives and questions. Core beginner grammar with 20 questions.
The past simple is the tense we use to talk about finished actions in the past. Yesterday Aisha studied English; last week Omar visited his family; Yusuf watched a film on Friday. The action is over — it happened and finished.
Regular verbs: add -ed
Most verbs are regular — we just add -ed to make the past. And here is the easy part: the past form is the same for every subject (I, you, he, she, we, they).
| Verb | Past | Example |
|---|---|---|
| work | worked | Omar worked late yesterday. |
| play | played | The children played in the park. |
| study | studied | Aisha studied for her test. (y → ied) |
| stop | stopped | The bus stopped here. (double the consonant) |
Irregular verbs: you must learn them
Some very common verbs are irregular — they don’t take -ed and must be memorised.
| Verb | Past | Verb | Past |
|---|---|---|---|
| go | went | have | had |
| eat | ate | see | saw |
| buy | bought | make | made |
| take | took | come | came |
| get | got | write | wrote |
- We went to the market on Saturday.
- Aisha ate breakfast at seven.
- Omar bought a new laptop.
Negatives and questions: use “did”
For negatives and questions, we use did + the base verb — and the main verb goes back to its simple form (no -ed, no irregular change).
| Type | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Negative | didn’t + base verb | She didn’t go to school. |
| Question | Did + subject + base verb | Did you watch the film? |
