Welcome to Elementary (A2) grammar! Now that you can talk about the present and past, it’s time for the future. We use going to to talk about plans we have already decided, and predictions based on what we can see.

How to make it: be + going to + base verb

Subject am/is/are + going to + verb
I I am going to study tonight.
he / she / it Aisha is going to take an exam.
you / we / they We are going to travel in summer.
Two parts to rememberYou need the correct form of be (am/is/are) AND going to. The main verb stays in its base form: “going to study,” not “going to studying.”

When we use “going to”

Use Example
Plans & intentions (already decided) Omar is going to start a new job.
Predictions from evidence Look at those clouds — it is going to rain.

Negatives and questions

  • Negative: I’m not going to watch TV tonight.
  • Question: Are you going to join the class? — Yes, I am. / No, I’m not.
  • Question word: What are you going to do at the weekend?
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersDon’t drop the “be” verb: not “I going to study” but “I am going to study.” In fast speech, English speakers often say “gonna” (I’m gonna study) — you will hear it a lot, but write the full “going to.”
