Future with “Will”

Use will for instant decisions, promises, offers and predictions — and learn how it differs from going to. A2 grammar with 20 questions.

You already know “going to” for plans. Now meet will — the other main future form. We use will for decisions made at the moment of speaking, promises, offers, and predictions we believe or think.

How to make it: will + base verb

The best part: will is the same for every subject, and the verb stays in its base form.

Subject will + verb
I / you / he / she / it / we / they I will help you. / She will call later.
Short formsThe short form of will is ’ll (I’ll, you’ll, she’ll). The negative is won’t (= will not).

When we use “will”

Use Example
Decision made now I’m thirsty. I ’ll get some water.
Promise I ’ll always help you with English.
Offer ’ll I carry that for you?
Prediction (I think/believe) I think you ’ll pass the exam.

will vs going to

going to will
plan decided before now decision made at the moment
“I’m going to visit my aunt tomorrow.” (already planned) “The phone is ringing — I’ll answer it.” (decided now)

Negatives and questions

  • Negative: I won’t be late.
  • Question: Will you help me? — Yes, I will. / No, I won’t.
  • What time will the lesson start?
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersTwo reminders: after will, always use the base verb (“will go,” not “will goes” or “will to go”). And will never changes — it’s the same for he, she, and they. Simpler than the present tense!
