The Importance of Water
Read about why water is so vital and why we must protect it. A B1 reading text with key words and questions.
Water is essential for all life on Earth. Human beings can survive for weeks without food, but only a few days without water. It makes up around 60% of the human body and is involved in almost every process that keeps us alive, from controlling our temperature to carrying nutrients around the body. Despite its importance, many people do not drink enough of it.
Water is not only vital for our bodies; it is also crucial for society as a whole. We use it to grow crops, produce electricity and run factories. Clean water is one of the foundations of a healthy community, and access to it has a huge effect on people’s lives. Sadly, millions of people around the world still do not have safe drinking water, and this leads to disease and hardship.
Water may seem endless, especially to those who can simply turn on a tap, but in fact fresh water is a limited resource. Only a small percentage of the water on Earth is fresh and available for us to use. As the world’s population grows and the climate changes, using water wisely is becoming more and more important. Simple actions, such as turning off the tap while brushing your teeth or fixing leaks, can make a real difference. Protecting this precious resource is a responsibility we all share.
