A short message or note is one of the most common things you write in real life: a text to a friend, a note to a classmate, or a quick message to a teacher. At A1 level, you can write a clear, polite short message using a simple three-part structure. This lesson shows you how.

1. The three parts of a short message

Part What it does Example
Greeting say hello to the person Hi Omar, / Dear Aisha,
Message your main point (1–3 sentences) I can’t come to class today because I am sick.
Sign-off a friendly ending + your name See you soon, Yusuf

2. Greetings and sign-offs

Greetings Sign-offs
Hi + name, (friendly) Thanks, / Bye for now,
Hello + name, (neutral) See you soon, / Best wishes,
Dear + name, (polite) Kind regards, (polite)
Put a comma after the nameAfter a greeting, use a comma: “Hi Omar,”. Start your message on the next line with a capital letter. Do the same after the sign-off: “Thanks,” then your name.

3. Common reasons for a short message

  • To say you can’t come: “I can’t come to the party because I am busy.”
  • To say thank you: “Thank you for your help yesterday.”
  • To invite: “Do you want to study together on Monday?”
  • To ask: “Can you send me the homework, please?”

4. A complete model message

Model noteHi Aisha,
I can’t come to class today because I am sick. Can you send me the notes, please? Thank you!
See you soon,
Omar
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersKeep it short and direct. In Arabic, messages often begin with long greetings and blessings. In English, especially in a short note, one line of greeting is enough — go straight to your point. Also, always add please and thank you; in English these small words are what make a message sound polite, not long formal phrases.

Examples from EduCareer

  • Hi Omar, I am at the library. Can you meet me here? Thanks, Aisha
  • Dear Teacher, I will be late tomorrow because of the bus. Sorry! Kind regards, Yusuf
Common mistakes

hi omar i cant come  →  Hi Omar, I can’t come.

Send me the homework.  →  Can you send me the homework, please?

(no name at the end)  →  Thanks, Yusuf
