Local Teenager Wins National Science Prize

A 17-year-old student from our town has won a major national science competition. Layla Hassan, a student at Riverside High School, impressed the judges with her project on cleaning dirty water using cheap, natural materials.

Layla spent over a year working on her project at home and at school. “I wanted to find a solution that poor communities could actually afford,” she explained. “Clean water should not be a luxury.” Her invention uses sand, charcoal and other simple items to remove harmful substances from water.

Her science teacher, Mr Tan, said he was extremely proud. “Layla is hard-working and curious. She never accepts easy answers.” Layla will now represent the country at an international competition next year. She hopes to study environmental science at university and to continue helping communities in need. “This is only the beginning,” she said with a smile.
