Master a, an and the — when to use each, the sound rule, and when to use no article at all. Beginner grammar with 20 questions.
Articles are the little words a, an, and the. They come before nouns. They are small, but they are everywhere in English — and using them correctly makes your English sound much more natural.
A and An — for one of many
Use a or an when you talk about one general thing, not a specific one.
- Omar has a job. (one job, not a specific one we already know)
- Aisha is reading a book.
- Ms Layla wants an apple.
When to use “a” and when to use “an”
This depends on the sound at the start of the next word, not just the letter.

Listen to the soundWe say “a university” (it starts with a “yu” sound) but “an hour” (the “h” is silent, so it starts with a vowel sound). Trust your ears, not just the spelling.
The — for something specific
Use the when both people know exactly which thing you mean.

A / an vs the — the key difference
- I want to eat an apple. (any apple)
- I want to eat the apple. (one specific apple we both know)
When NOT to use “the”

| Not with general/plural things | Aisha likes the books. (in general) → Aisha likes books. |
| Not with languages | I study the English. → I study English. |
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersArabic has “ال” (al-) for “the,” but it has no word for “a/an”. So Arabic speakers often forget to add a or an: they say I am teacher instead of I am a teacher. Whenever you talk about one general job, thing, or person, remember the little a or an.
Common mistakes
- She is teacher. → She is a teacher.
- I eat a egg. → I eat an egg.
- I live in the Kuala Lumpur. → I live in Kuala Lumpur.
