At B1 you go beyond the basics of a/an/the and learn when to use no article (the “zero article”) and how the works with general vs specific meaning.

The three choices

Article Use Example
a/an one, not specific (first mention) I saw a film last night.
the specific / already known The film was great.
(no article) general/plural/uncountable I like films.
General vs specificTalking in general? Use no article with plurals and uncountables: “Coffee is popular,” “Children learn fast.” Talking about specific ones? Use the: “The coffee here is great,” “The children in my class.”

Common no-article cases

Category Example
meals have breakfast, after lunch
most countries, languages visit Japan, speak Arabic
by + transport by car, by bus
go to + institution (purpose) go to school, go to work

Examples from EduCareer

  • I booked a lesson. The lesson was excellent.
  • English is useful for work. (general, no article)
  • She goes to university by bus.
  • The teacher gave us the best advice.
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersArabic has “al-” but no “a/an,” so two habits to break: (1) don’t put “the” before general plurals/uncountables — “I like music,” not “the music”; (2) don’t forget a/an with singular countable nouns — “She is a teacher,” not “She is teacher.”
Common mistakes

  • I like the music. (in general) → I like music.
  • She is teacher.She is a teacher.
  • I go to the work by the bus.I go to work by bus.
