English has three articles: a, an, and the. Small as they are, they appear in almost every sentence, and using them well makes your writing flow naturally. This lesson shows you exactly when to use each one.

English has three articles: a, an, and the. Small as they are, they appear in almost every sentence, and using them well makes your writing flow naturally. This lesson shows you exactly when to use each one.

1. A vs. An — it depends on the sound

Use a before a consonant sound. Use an before a vowel sound. Listen to the first sound, not the letter.

a book, a car, a student an apple, an orange, an egg
a university (“yoo” sound) an hour (the “h” is silent)
a uniform (“yoo” sound) an x-ray (“eks” sound)
Sound, not spelling“University” starts with the letter u but the sound is “yoo” (a consonant sound), so we say a university. “Hour” starts with h but the sound is “ow” (a vowel sound), so we say an hour.

2. A / An = one of many (not specific)

Use a or an when the thing is not specific — it is one of many, or mentioned for the first time.

  • He has a book. (one of many books)
  • I ate an orange. (one of many oranges)
  • Cairo is a city. (one of many cities)

3. The = specific / known

Use the when both people know which one — because it is unique, or already mentioned.

Why “the”? Example
Only one exists the sun, the president of Egypt
Already known / understood Aisha cleaned the kitchen. (her kitchen)
Mentioned before I bought a book. The book was cheap.

4. First time “a”, second time “the”

A useful pattern: introduce something with a/an, then use the to talk about it again.

  • Yusuf saw a dog. The dog was friendly.
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersArabic has “al-” (ال) like the, but it has no word for “a/an”. So Arabic speakers often drop “a/an”: they write “He is teacher” instead of “He is a teacher.” Rule of thumb: a singular, countable noun almost always needs an article in front of it (a, an, or the). If you see a lonely singular noun with no article, check it.
