English has many ways to talk about the future, and at B2 the skill is choosing the right one for the meaning. This lesson compares the main future forms and when each is natural.

The main future forms

Form Use Example
will predictions, decisions made now, promises I think it ‘ll rain. / I ‘ll help you.
going to plans/intentions; evidence-based predictions We ‘re going to move house.
Present Continuous fixed arrangements with a time/place I‘m meeting her at 6.
Present Simple timetables and schedules The train leaves at 9.
Future Continuous action in progress at a future time This time tomorrow I‘ll be flying.
Future Perfect completed before a future point By June I‘ll have finished.
will vs going toUse going to for a plan already decided (“We’re going to paint the room”) and for predictions based on present evidence (“Look at those clouds — it’s going to rain”). Use will for an instant decision (“The phone’s ringing — I’ll get it”) and opinions/predictions (“I think she’ll win”).

Future Perfect & Future Continuous

Form Structure Meaning
Future Continuous will be + -ing in progress at a future moment
Future Perfect will have + past participle finished before a future deadline

Examples from EduCareer

  • Our next course starts on Monday. (timetable)
  • Aisha is taking her exam on Friday. (arrangement)
  • By next year, Omar will have completed three levels.
Tutor tip for Arabic speakersEnglish uses the present forms for the future more than you’d expect. Fixed plans take the Present Continuous (“I’m seeing the doctor tomorrow”) and schedules take the Present Simple (“the flight departs at noon”). Don’t default to “will” for everything — it often sounds less natural for arrangements.
